Symposium, held on [May 31st,2024], was an unforgettable experience filled with profound insights, transformative discussions, and a spirit of genuine connection. Melanincon Reporting, through its Cocoa Butta Buzz segment, was honored to be in attendance, bringing live coverage and in-depth reporting to our audience.
Theme: Radical Attunement
This year’s theme, “Radical Attunement,” set the stage for two days of deep listening, empathetic understanding, and authentic connection. The symposium created a space where every voice was heard and valued, emphasizing safety, belonging, and dignity.
Highlights of the Symposium:
Lively “Family Reunion” Mixer: The event kicked off with a vibrant mixer where attendees mixed, mingled, and built meaningful connections. The atmosphere was supportive and uplifting, embodying the essence of a family reunion.
Engaging Panels: Panels covered a wide range of topics critical to mental health and well-being in the Black community. Discussions included redefining masculinity and addressing generational trauma, with influential voices sharing practical strategies and personal experiences.
Breakout Sessions: These sessions challenged societal norms and redefined mental health practices within the Black community. Attendees explored diverse topics that encouraged personal and communal growth.
Inspiring Fireside Chat: Candid conversations addressed tough issues and offered pathways to healing and liberation, fostering a deeper understanding and connection among participants.
Integrative Wellness Sessions: Attendees nurtured their mental and emotional well-being through rejuvenating practices like yoga, sound bowls, and meditation.
Exhibit Hall: The hall was buzzing with activity as attendees explored resources, connected with exhibitors, and took home an array of goodies.
BoBo’s Joy Joint: The symposium concluded with an ’80s/’90s party-with-a-purpose, celebrating joy and resilience while supporting mental health initiatives.
Cocoa Butta Buzz's Featured Session: Healing the Family Tree
Cocoa Butta Buzz provided live coverage of the impactful general session, “Healing the Family Tree: Generational Trauma, Religion/Spirituality, and Mental Health in BIPOC Communities.” The session, moderated by Tracie Jade, featured an enlightening discussion with Taraji P. Henson and esteemed guests including Dr. Lamman Rucker, Dr. Jay Barnett, Dr. Anita Phillips, and Anthony Lee.
The conversation delved into the layers of generational trauma, the role of religion and spirituality, and mental health within Black families. It confronted the sanctified silence surrounding trauma, highlighting how religious beliefs can obscure emotional wounds and emphasizing the need to heal fractures within Black families. The panelists shared personal narratives and professional insights, offering pathways to healing and liberation.
